An elegant pair of Georgian sterling silver tongs, with marks attributed based upon research for London, 1798, George Smith II & Thomas Hoyter. Pieces with While the city office mark is missing, a lack of assay mark can range from a desire on the silversmith’s part to avoid the marking fee, or to avoid the plate tax on export.

Based upon the Georgian design elements of these tongs as well as cartouche of the sponsor mark, this mark is most likely that of George Smith II & Thomas Hoyter, illustrious silversmiths of this period whose partnership was active from 1791 to 1804. They were known for their quality, with the lovely bright cut pattern on these tongs as an example.

Monogrammed with the initials “P” and “I M” to the bow.

Price marked at $250 AUD.

Measurements: 31.8 grams, 14.5cm length.

Excellent antique condition overall, marks are overall lightly worn but legible.
