A beautiful George II sterling silver tablespoon, with marks for London, 1759, crested with a demi-lion emerging from a coronet. Due to the prevalent usage of the Demi-lion rampant in English heraldry, it is difficult to pinpoint a family. However, based on research, one intriguing possible connexion emerges via the 19th century volume Heraldic bookplates collected by David H Graham, which was commissioned to focus on 18th century surnames and their crests. Thomas Beach (1738-1806), a noted portrait painter of his time, was noted to have an armorial crest as follows: “A Demi-lion comes out of a ducal coronet”.
Price marked at $350 AUD.
Measurements: 17.5cm length, 31.1g
Very good antique condition overall, maker’s marks rubbed.
