19th Century Victorian Tartan Ware Go To Bed / Match Holder Lidded Box, McLean Pattern
19th Century Victorian Tartan Ware Go To Bed / Match Holder Lidded Box, McLean Pattern
A late 19th century tartanware box, which used to be called "Go-To-Beds". They were so called because before the advent of electric lights, one would light a match, place it in the little bone finial and and carry it to light their way to bed.
Inlay is in good condition. A classic tartan in the McLean pattern. The MacLean clan is not only one of the oldest Scottish Highlands clans, but they were renowned for their strength and honour. Their founder was Gillean of the BattleAxe; certainly a name fit for any warlord.
Overall a charming and collectible piece.
Price marked at $300 AUD.
Measurements: 5.5 diameter, 5.5cm height.
Good antique condition with some wear as pictured commensurate with age.
