This beautiful Georgian serving bowl is circa 1770-83 and is from the Chelsea-Derby factory. The Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory was one of the first important English porcelain manufacturers (1743-45). In 1770 they merged with Derby porcelain, another great maker in English porcelain history.

Here you can see the lobed bowl pattern, with a lovely shaped and gilded rim. Loosely executed swags of blue-green roses drape from gold rings; a really classic Regency style and a piece that will only increase in desirability over time. This is a particularly rare and desirable pattern; a teapot in this pattern is in the Met museum collection, while a punchbowl in this pattern was estimated by Bonham to be between £1,000 - £1,200 in 2009.

According to Bonhams (a highly reputable auction house), the painting “is closely related to that produced in the workshops of James Giles. The bowl may have been painted at Chelsea by an artist who had formerly worked at Giles or it may be the product of another independent decorating establishment.”

Price marked at $1150 AUD.

Measurements: 20 cm dia., 4cm height.

Condition: Very good antique condition; some wear commensurate with age, such as to gilt around the rim. Some firing/ manufacture flaws as is common with English porcelain of this age and period. The Chelsea-Derby mark (in gold) is legible.
