Dressed in a palette of white, brown, red and green, this beautiful lady is depicted here securing her wrap or himation. Her face is beautifully moulded and a blush to her face and elbows add vitality to the porcelain. In this neo-classical pose the lady’s hands and face, as well as the folds of her peplos or long tunic are displayed to best advantage. Hints of gilding to her hair wreath and sleeves signify her status as a wealthy lady. Nowadays, classical Greco-Roman statuary is often perceived as the Renaissance-esque ideal: white marble, clean lines and not a trace of paint to be found. However, this mid 19th century figure perhaps hews closer to what classical statues would have looked like back in the day.
Upon initial inspection the pottery marks appear to be that of Italian, specifically Capodimonte. However upon further research of the piece overall and closer inspection, we are identifying this as a fine European porcelain piece, likely German and attributed to the Rudolstadt factory Ernst Bohne Söhne, a firm noted for its excellent figural work. Either way, it is assuredly a figure executed with skill and precision.
She is in excellent antique condition with only slight wear to gilt along her sleeves and a manufacturing flaw under her left arm. Both unlikely to be seen when displayed unless closely examined. Wear to base commensurate with age.
Dimensions: Approximately 21cm high.
