This extremely rare Art Deco morpho wing hairbrush features a number of great names in the history of British jewellery. The sterling silver mount bears hallmarks for Thomas L Mott, Birmingham, 1928. Mott is perhaps most famous for the morpho butterfly wing jewellery craze that was immensely popular throughout the Art Deco period, which was first unveiled to the public in his exhibit at the British Exposition of 1924. Mott subsequently acquired two other creators of butterfly wing jewellery, Henry W King & Son and Owen Brothers, to become the pre-eminent producer of the ‘20s and ‘30s.
Mott also employed a number of talented artists, among whom Dorothy Buckley is perhaps the most famous. This particular landscape, excellently executed, bears her signature at the bottom. Known for her reverse painting on morpho pieces for companies such as Shipton, her pieces remain highly desirable today and signed pieces in particular are very rare. This is one of the very few we have seen with her signature for a Mott piece.
Morpho wing jewellery from this era remains highly desirable, with pieces from the 1920s being the earliest British examples documented.
