Silver grape scissors were first produced in the eighteenth century circa 1790. Trimming the grapes was not only more genteel, but also preserved the longevity of the fruit- important in days before refrigeration methods were invented.

Early grape scissors were highly utilitarian in look and style, but by the late Georgian period around 1815 onwards there was an explosion in designs, both in terms of variety and style.

Chased vine patterns and neo-classical motifs were highly popular, and many were made to suit highly individual tastes.

These particular scissors are from renowned silversmith Chawner & Co (1840-1883), which was initially founded in 1815 by William Chawner. They were made in 1876 when the firm was owned by a family relative named George Adams. The firm really entered its heyday under Adams’ leadership, described by modern expert as being “the most important manufacturer of spoons and forks in London”. They participated in both the 1851 Great Exhibition and the 1862 International Exhibition. Their pattern book (c.1875) is a much looked to reference for many Victorian patterns, and they supplied some very important retailers such as Hunt & Roskell, R.& S. Garrard & Co and Elkington & Co.

Chawner silverwares are highly collectable, particularly their grape scissors. Featuring beautiful repousse work and a classic vine and grape design, this is a timeless and stunning piece. These are therefore well priced at AU$900.
