An elegant Scottish sterling silver chatelaine spool knave with partial marks including thistle mark for Scotland and Queen Victoria duty mark. Diamond registration mark to side dating this design to be registered on the 22nd February, 1876.
This was made to fit up to two spools of thread, in a beautiful stirrup-shaped frame. Engraved with a paisley design to the top of the chatelaine clip, a nod to this iconic pattern’s Scottish origins.
These spool knaves were worn suspended from the waistband, which allowed the wearer to have a continuous supply of thread when lace-making, tatting etc. Ornate examples made in sterling silver such as this one would have been worn by the lady of the house in wealthier households or high-ranking servants in noble households.
Price marked at $750 AUD.
Measurements: 38.2grams silver weight. 16 cm total length from top of clip to base, 10cm across at widest point.
Excellent antique condition with minor wear overall commensurate with age. Partial marks as described above.
