A handsome matched pair of antique neo-classical Victorian silver candlesticks with marks for James Kebberling Bembridge, Sheffield, 1881.
They most resemble Doric columns of the Hellenistic period which so fascinated the Victorians on their Grand Tours, but with beaded details to the tops, which are removable, and a stepped square base. Both with matching sterling silver collars, date and mark correct.
The hallmarks are of James Kebberling Bembridge, who became managing director of the silversmithing company Hawksworth, Ayre & Co Ltd of Nursery Street, Sheffield. The undersides have base metal inserts to stabilise them.
Price marked at $680 AUD for the pair.
Measurements: 12.5cm high, 8 by 8 base measurements. 886 grams with weighted bases.
Condition: Very good antique condition. Rubbing to one candlestick’s hallmarks but the other one is crisp and clear. One is missing its felt base. Overall excellent for use and display.
