This is a really exquisite piece and pictures honestly do not do this justice. Carved from a single substantial piece of ivory, this antique Chinese Budai or Hotei figure is one of the best pieces of Chinese ivory we have come across in a while. Known as the Laughing Buddha in the Western world,
Hotei has traditionally symbolized good fortune and is one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Chinese and Japanese culture. A semi-historical figure, he is regarded by his followers as a reincarnation of Maitreya Buddha.
The rounded features of Hotei, which are so central to the character, really speak to the skill of the carver. Even the strand of beads around his neck are carefully graduated in size, as well as. With its original fitted stand, this is an heirloom piece and is circa late 19th to early 20th century.
