This fascinating 19th century Meiji period ivory netsuke is highly unusual in style and depiction.
We have been very fortunate to come across some excellent antique ivory netsukes lately; these Noh netsukes are rare and highly sought after.
The highlight of course is the Noh actor’s revolving faces, switching from the actor’s face to a demon (hanya) mask. Face-changing is an integral part of Noh drama and the cleverly done expressions add a touch of levity to this charming piece. This one has particularly well-carved expressiveness as well as a finely carved staff.
Signed to base but the hiragana is either slightly rubbed or an archaic character, possibly Wayama.

Price marked at $1500 AUD.
Dimensions: 5cm high, 2 by x3 cm base measurements.
Very good antique condition with mild signs of wear commensurate with age and use.
