This remarkable antique Japanese ivory netsuke depicting a farmer is signed on the base by Mitsunobu (光信). Mitsunobu was active in the late Edo to early Meiji period. This piece would be circa early Meiji period as scenes depicting traditional Japanese life grew increasingly popular at that time. Little information was found on this carver but considering the quality of craftsmanship, the time period and the centralisation of activity in Edo/Tokyo at the time, it is highly likely that Mitsunobu was part of the early Tokyo School of ivory netsuke carvers.

Price marked at $1000AUD.

Base measurements: 2 by 4cm, 4.2cm high.

Good antique condition commensurate with age; area of wear to base.
