A beautiful antique Manchu Chinese knife with matching sheath and chopsticks, circa late 19th to early 20th century. During the Qing Dynasty period, great focus was placed on maintaining Manchu traditions and ethnicity. Besides the knife, this sheath also contains a pair of chopsticks which meant that the bearer could cut and use their own food. The use of personal knives at meals was a distinct mark of Manchu identity, in contrast to the Han Chinese of having their meat served pre-cut.

Intriguingly, the knife sheath has a later addition of a hand strap which bears two Republic period Ten Fen Coins coins dating to 1941, a later bearer’s addition.

Amazing inlay of copper and brass to hilt of knife and stealth, worked in a wavy tempered design. Two stars in repousse to sheath. An interesting piece boasting stunning craftsmanship which has witnessed a momentous period in Chinese history.
