A lovely late Victorian Sterling Silver creamer jug with shell detail, Walter and John Barnard, London, 1888. Crested with a heraldic device of an eagle, possibly falcon with its head aloft.

Substantial with thick gauge, well-struck hallmarks and crisply done details overall, with a fine border with shell motifs and foliate details to the border and handle.

Walter and John Barnard were silversmiths of note, described by one expert as being “possibly the oldest manufacturing silversmith in the world”. Founded by Anthony Nelme in 1680, the firm changed owners over the years with notables such as Henry Chawner and Edward Barnard. In 1977, Edward Barnard & Sons Limited became a subsidiary of Padgett & Braham Ltd.

A fine and very collectible piece of English silver making history.

Price marked at $800 AUD.

Measurements: 168grams.

Excellent antique condition overall, some gilt loss to interior. Hallmarks crisp and well-struck.
