Today we have a 19th century Sumitsubo, a traditional Japanese carpenter’s line and reel.
Building construction in Japan has used these traditional tools for centuries, and the Sumitsubo produces a much finer line compared to Wesyern chalk systems.
Instead of dry chalk, cotton wool or wadding is soaked in ink. The thread is then drawn through the damp wadding, fixed and then snapped against the surface; immediately displaying a fine, straight line.
The sumitsubo slowly evolved to become not just a carpenter’s tool, but also possess a ceremonial function upon building completion.
This particular one is a beautiful blend of art and function, carved from what is most likely mulberry wood with a Genji-style design, most likely to be named after the eponymous craftsman Genji Tsurukame.
The makers mark is carved on the bottom; he was also possibly the carpenter who would go on to use this tool as per tradition.

Condition: Very good antique condition. Wear commensurate with age and use, particularly to bottom. No major chips or flaws.
