A beautiful antique George IV crested sterling silver condiment spoon with marks for William Chawner, London, 1828.

This condiment spoon is a fine example of this maker’s early work, with a gilt-washed bowl and a crest engraved of a swan with wings aloft, perched upon a rock. The swan has a long history in English heraldry, with medieval references dating to the de Bohun family, Henry V’s matrilineal family. The descendants include the Lancastrian Plantagenets as well as the Staffords.
