A very elegant pair of George II crested sterling silver wick trimmers with iron bladed mechanism, London, 1759, IC. Unfortunately we cannot attribute this piece to a specific maker as the IC mark was used by several makers during this period, all of whose marks were highly similar to each other: John Catt, Joseph Clare II and John Clemenson.

The handles and upper part of the extinguisher are sterling silver; the assay marks are within the interior of the extinguisher. The trimming mechanism and blades is made of heavily silvered cast steel, as technology of the period meant that these blades had to do ‘heavy duty’. The trimmer has 3 raised feet, one at the wax pick and two at the handles (one at each finger ring).

A very rare, highly collectible and elegant piece.

Price marked at $1250 AUD.

Measurements: 16.5cm length, 98grams total weight.

Very good antique condition, wear overall commensurate with age; one spot of wear to base of blades as pictured.
