This lovely English sterling silver match holder / ashtray was an elegant solution to the gentleman pipe-smoker’s quandary; the weighted base meant that the matches could be directly struck to light his pipe, while tapping the ashes out from the pipe would not overtly jolt.
Marks for Birmingham, sterling silver and 1905. Maker’s marks for William Devenport, a silver making company that was active from 1893 to 1948; these particular marks establish that this was when the company was in its Northwood Street premises in Birmingham around the turn of the century,
With a rope twist border and engine turned details to the match holding compartment, this would make an elegant smoker’s accompaniment or even a modern candle holder.
