Antique Chinese Lotus / Golden Lily Shoes circa late 19th century, Silk w Curled Toes

These lovely lotus shoes circa the late 19th century are emblematic of China’s distant past. With their cotton soles and delicate embroidery, these silk and cotton shoes were likely worn indoors. These were made entirely by hand, carefully hand stitched by women for indoor use. Whether for personal use or as gifts for friends and family, the elaborate stitches displayed the skill of the maker. Their delicacy meant that these tiny shoes, as well as the bound feet within them, were often euphemized as "golden lotuses" or "golden lilies".

During the 1910s, lotus shoes used Western embellishments such as buttons and sequins. However, after the Cultural Revolution these shoes were far more muted in colour. Despite social norms rapidly changing, Ioot binding persisted as a social custom until the 1950s. These are likely circa 1860-1890s- no later than turn of the century.

Nowadays thankfully foot binding is no longer prevalent in society. Nevertheless, these tiny works of art, whether to a collector of curiosities or a textile enthusiast, remain very collectable. 

With a high vamp, exquisite silk embroidery and a lovely coin-shaped heel, these are made likely in a Southern Han Chinese style and make a beautiful display item. With a lightly curled toe, this is an unusual and lovely style. The back was left unstitched indicating the maker intended on stitching it to fit at a later date.

Condition: Fair antique condition. Signs of wear as pictured and light shattering to the silk near the top. Still good for display.
