Today we have a fascinating antique print from 1862 depicting an intersection of British socio-colonial history; a hand-engraved and coloured print titled “A Tiger Hunt at Java (from a sketch by M. Bonnet)” dated 1862.
A bamboo enclosure has been hastily erected- inside, one man armed only with a dagger is facing down a snarling tiger. Outside, onlookers are bracing the walls of the enclosure while soldiers observe from horseback.
Tiger hunting was widespread during the British Raj and colonial times, and was immortalised by many British authors. Attitudes of that time were depicted in books such as Rudy yard Kipling‘s The Jungle Book as well as James Corbett’s books on the man-eating tigers of Kumaon. Perfect for collectors of ephemera and history enthusiasts. Price marked at $330 AUD. For serious inquiries, please DM or contact us at Cache Antiques.
Condition: Print in excellent antique condition. Slight wear to frame but still makes for a lovely display piece.
Dimensions: Frame measures 45 by 36cm.
