9ct gold Edwardian vesta case inscribed with “Forward” and Winged Heart of Bruce

Stunning Edwardian vesta case in 9ct gold inscribed with the motto “Forward” over a winged and crowned heart. Our research led us to Scottish clan badges, particularly that of Clan Douglas. Since the 14th century, Clan Douglas has been associated with Robert the Bruce, the famous Scottish king and national hero. They were entrusted to carry his heart to the Holy Land but unfortunately the quest foundered in mysterious circumstances. Hence the Heart of Bruce has been associated with the Douglas Clan for over 500 years, and in more recent times has been the crest of the Clan Douglas Society of North America.
Hallmarks are for Birmingham, 1905 and by S Blanckensee and Son Ltd.
