This set of 4 Chinese export silver spoons are circa the 1930s and have a fascinating story mingling war, assassins and covert operations.

These spoons bear marks from Feng Xiang Yu Ji which was a branch of the Feng Xiang active from 1880 to 1930.  Both were both fine silver retailers based in Tientsin, but Feng Xiang You Chi also had its own workshop, which were retailed by other retail silversmiths such as Khe Cheong (see von Ferscht’s excellent research on Chinese Export silver). Beautifully etched to each bowl with a bird and pine branch scene.

These later made their way to Shanghai, where they came into the possession of the Yellow Way Society. Upon the takeover of Shanghai in 1937 by Japanese imperial forces, under their covert guidance secret societies were set up to suppress any and all independence movements. The most notorious of these would be the Huangdaohui, i.e. the Yellow Way Society, and the society name is seen here etched to the stem of each spoon. Although the name derived from anti-Qing forces, this secret society was in fact led by Japanese imperial military agents and Chinese collaborators. Throughout 1938 to 1939, they conducted assassinations and bombings, often carrying several attacks in one night. This came to an end in 1940 when Chinese Republic forces arrested and executed most of their leaders.

One wonders how these spoons came to Australia; whether as pieces of art or as a fascinating part of history, these spoons are highly collectible.
