19th Century Victorian Tartan Ware Go To Bed / Match Holder Lidded Box, Prince Charlie Pattern
19th Century Victorian Tartan Ware Go To Bed / Match Holder Lidded Box, Prince Charlie Pattern
A late 19th century tartanware box, which used to be called "Go-To-Beds". They were so called because before the advent of electric lights, one would light a match, place it in the little bone finial and and carry it to light their way to bed.
Inlay is in good condition. A classic pattern in the Prince Charlie pattern, clearly named after Bonnie Prince Charlie- The Scottish Register of Tartans notes that “the reason for such a profusion of Prince Charles Edward tartans is said to be his habit of honouring his host at that time by wearing his tartan. In his travels he obviously stayed/hid with many hosts.”
Overall a charming and collectible piece.
Price marked at $300 AUD.
Measurements: 5.5 diameter, 6cm height.
Good antique condition with some wear as pictured commensurate with age.
