Shoushan rock carving is an art form dating to the 5th century in Fujian province (寿山石). Among the semiprecious stones used there, none were more desirable than Tianhuang stone, the rarest soapstone variety in China. Prized for its rich golden hues, Tianhuang stone was being used to make imperial seals as early as the Ming Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Qianlong not only had it carved for seals, but also placed it among the Lunar New Year's offerings seeking the blessings of Heaven. This particularly exceptional snuff bottle is an excellent example of the art form and also this stone’s qualities. Auspiciously carved in the shape of a leaping carp, it is sure to delight even the most discerning collectors.
Price marked at AUD$1280. Measurements: 7cm height, 5cm width, approx 2 cm deep. 131 grams. Very good antique condition. Spoon intact, albeit wear consistent with age.
