This lovely black and yellow pitcher jug is a great example of midcentury pottery, with its bold design and modernist yellow and white stripes.

Made by Zell Schmider Keramik in West Germany, this was part of the “Tigris” range and was designed by Anneliese Beckh in 1956. Beckh was Schmider’s main designer from 1950 to 1983 and pieces designed by her are highly collectible today.

This vase was exported to Australia by West German firm Grizelle; not much exists in the literature about them, but they would repackage West German pottery for sale in Australia, Japan and Taiwan. Hence the stamped “Grizelle” and hall marks on the base of this lovely pitcher. This would make a fantastic display piece or serve as a pitcher, possibly as a vase.

Price marked at $220AUD

Overall good vintage condition with one tiny chip to rim (not too noticeable when turned to back) and wear to base commensurate with age. Still very collectible and an unusual piece, particularly in Australia.
