Each Flambé glaze piece is by nature of the glaze one of a kind.

The art of flambé glaze or “sang de bouef” in the West was directly inspired by Ming dynastic pottery practices. Precise temperatures were required in order for the oxides to flash red; this skill only emerged in the West centuries later, with pioneers such as Charles Noke finally achieving this technique.

This cylinder vase features an extremely rare backstamp used only on the earliest of flambe ware. Very little information can be found on this particular mark, but it was likely in use from 1904 when Doulton & Co. first introduced their Flambe Glaze at the St Louis Exhibition. This particular vase, with its lovely desert scenes, is likely circa 1910-1920 as per other extant examples, which was the Slater Period.

This particular design is an elegant shape, but the really eye-catching details would be the artwork on the vase. The brushwork is very well-executed, and it is possible to discern the rider’s Bedouin garb as well as the trappings on the camel. This level of detail is unusual in Doulton flambe glaze, which usually has a more silhouette-like look.

Price marked at AUD$680.

Measurements: 23.5 cm high, 7.5 base dia.

Condition: Very good antique condition with wear to base and tiny spots of wear to glaze commensurate with age and antique Doulton flambe conditions.
