A fine George III sterling silver ladle by Thomas Chawner with assay marks for London, 1773. Elegantly made with bright cut pattern to ladle handle as well as engraving of an eagle displayed, the family crest of the Bacchus family whose various branches used eagles as part of their heraldry.

During the early 19th century, members of the Bacchus family migrated to Australia, with the most prominent member being perhaps Captain W.H. Bacchus.

Thomas Chawner was the older brother of William Chawner, a renowned silversmith whose descendants would later form Chawner & Co., one of our favourite firms and makers. Chawner & Co. were fine and prolific makers, supplying retailers such as Hunt & Roskell, R.& S. Garrard & Co & Elkington & Co.

Price marked at $500 AUD.

Measurements: 51.2 grams, 18cm length.

Excellent antique condition with light wear overall commensurate with age. Maker’s marks typical of the period but legible.
