Sterling silver High Victorian vinaigrette with marks for Aston & Son, Birmingham, 1859.
A very lovely sterling silver High Victorian vinaigrette with gilt-washed interior with marks for Aston & Son (Thomas & William Aston), Birmingham, 1859. This charming vinaigrette was used by fashionable ladies to hold scented fabric, which they would hold to their nose to ward off unpleasant odours (which was quite the necessity in the 18th century).
Beautifully engraved details to both the top and bottom. The cartouche is blank and the interior is gilt-washed, with a beautiful engraved grille.
These antique vinaigrettes are hotly desired by collectors and are rare to find, particularly here in Australia.
Price marked at $600 AUD.
Measurements: 3cm by 1.8cm base measurements. 8.9grams total weight.
Very good antique condition overall, damage to bail and small dimple to base which is not visible when displayed or used.
