Here we have a beautiful late Meiji to Taisho period Japanese export silver rose bowl, with intricate engraved floral motifs depicting the four seasons. With provenance from Harold Luther Everingham’s estate (1890-1953), who whilst working in Japan, survived the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and was employed by the Australian and New Zealand silk merchants Makower McBeath & Co in the 1920s.
Marked Jungin to the base, which indicates a standard of maximum silver purity, and in practical terms that was well above the sterling standard, ranging from .950 to .999 silver purity.
A beautiful piece, the rose bowl’s body is Jungin silver while the original flower cage is marked as silver-plated brass. No maker’s mark but this is clearly a piece of superior quality, likely made by a Japanese silver firm for the foreign market.
