A lovely substantial antique sterling silver serving spoon with rare William IV duty mark which was used from 29th May 1837 to 20th Jun 1837, other marks are for London, Mary Chawner. The wife of William Chawner II, she took over the business and ensured the continuation of the Chawner silvermaking dynasty until it was later taken overly her son-in-law George Adams. Hence she was only active for 6 years from 1834 to 1840, making pieces by her highly collectible as well as fine examples of antique silver in their own right.
Crested with a boar’s head couped and imbrued, this crest is of the Knaplock family of Hampshire (Fairbairn, 1905), named after Knapp, an early English settlement dating back to the Domesday Book.
Price marked at $1500 AUD.
Measurements: 132.8 grams. 30cm length.
Excellent antique condition, light wear overall commensurate with age. Marks crisp and well-struck.
