Aarly 20th century Royal Doulton 'Perch' plate circa 1900-1913 by Joseph Birbeck Senior.

Exquisite early 20th century Royal Doulton plate circa 1900-1913 handpainted in the rare “Perch” design by noted artist Joseph Birbeck Senior. The epitome of Gilded Age glamour, this plate has to be seen in person to be believed. The Birbecks were a distinguished family of ceramic painters, and Joseph Birbeck was a painter at Doulton from 1900 to 19126. He was noted for his fine designs for the North American market, and was noted for his studies in particular of birds and fish, as well as excellently executed underwater scenes.

With its beautiful hand-painted central motif, gilt border details and Greek Key trim, the finishing touch of a gilded foot rim denotes this piece being made to “export quality standards”- these pieces were retailed by the best department stores of their era in America, such as the luxury stores on Fifth Avenue, Newport as well as retailers including Tiffany & Co., Higgins & Seiter and Davis Collamore. This plate beautifully complements another piece by the same artist in our collection that depicts American Char.
