A lovely set of 6 early Victorian sterling silver spoons with marks for Dublin, 1839, Josiah Lowe. Lowe was active from 1819 to 1846, who made tableware of excellent quality.
Each spoon is engraved with a crest of a dexter arm in armour, embowed, in hand a scimitar, hilted and pommelled.
This crest belonged to the Earl of Aldborough, which was a title in the Peerage of Ireland, held by the Stratford family from 1777 until the title became extinct. Its origins trace back to John Stratford, the 1st Earl, who accumulated titles like Baron Baltinglass and Viscount Aldborough before being elevated to Earl in 1777.
