This rare antique Edwardian military presentation goblet was the Recruit Prize in 1909 for the RAMCTF 1st City of London Field Ambulance.
Silver-plated and engraved with the RAMCTF crest, as well as inscription for the Recruit Prize in 1909.
The RAMCTF was the Royal Army Medical Corps Territorial Force, and was established in 1908 as a volunteer home-defence reserve by Secretary of State for War Richard Haldane.
The Field Ambulance was not a vehicle but a mobile front line medical unit, and was responsible for establishing and operating points along the casualty evacuation chain, including an Advancing Dressing Station, the Main Dressing Station and a Walking Wounded Collecting Station. At full strength a Field Ambulance was composed of 10 officers and 224 men, and were crucial in providing triage and evacuation services in times of war. During peace years such as 1909, these units ran competitive training services to ensure they remained sharp; this prize would have been given to the most outstanding recruit of 1909.
Price marked at $300 AUD.
Measurements: 15cm high, 7cm cup diameter.
Very good antique condition, with minor wear overall commensurate with age.
