Beautiful large early Meiji Period Aritaware porcelain bowl by Koransha circa 1870s to 1880s.
Koransha was formally established in 1875 after centuries of porcelain development in Japan, when it immediately won acclaim and soon after a gold medal at the Paris Exposition of 1878. It would later gain an Imperial Warrant in the 1890s.
Beautifully painted with phoenix (ho-oh) birds in rich gilt and the “Three Friends of Winter” (pine trees, plum trees and bamboo) panelled motifs to interior. The exterior has lovely floral motifs throughout. Footed base with cobalt details.
Price marked at $1000 AUD.
Measurements: 10cm height. 25cm opening diameter
Very good antique condition with minor wear and loss to gilt overall commensurate with age as pictured. Rings true. Blue underglaze orchid mark of Koransha to base.
