A beautiful William IV set of 6 sterling silver table spoons with marks for London, 1832, Jonathan Hayne, bearing the crest of the Marquess of Abergavenny. The ducal crest and badges are beautifully engraved to each spoon, depicting a a bull's head emerging from a ducal coronet with a rose gu., seeded and barbed vert. to the left and to the right a portcullis. The Marquess of Abergavenny traces its origins to the House of Neville which reached its zenith of power during the War of the Roses, during which it played a central role.
Jonathan Hayne was a prolific and highly-regarded silversmith, pioneering techniques that would be documented in Andrew Ure's 1839 publication A Dictionary of Arts, Manufactures, and Mines. His work remains highly collectible, and this set in particular with its storied history would be highly desirable for any silver collector.
