A rare Edo Period ukiyo-e woodblock print circa 1840, “Five Famous Women in Japanese History” that showcases the artistry of Kunisada (1786-1865, 豊国画), one of the last great masters of the art. Here he uses both Kunisada as well as Toyokuni. From 1842 onwards, Kuniyoshi would more actively use the Toyokuni III signature, signaling his intention to succeed Utagawa Tokyokuni as the head of the Utagawa ukiyo-e school.

Kunisada’s art has influenced artists for centuries, including the Impressionists such as Van Gogh. His work is held in almost every major museum in the world, including the Met, the Princeton University Art Museum, the British Museum and has been featured in major exhibitions such as the Japan Supernatural exhibition in 2019 here at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Highly collectible, this is a rare original print from the Edo period which does not often come on the market.

The verso on the back is from M. Nakazawa in Tokyo, a highly reputable dealer in the 1950s who was located opposite the Imperial Palace and specialised in antique and fine prints. While his shop closed in 1987, prior to that he was internationally known and sourced excellent fine prints from the Edo to Meiji Period.

Price marked at $950 AUD.

Framed Measurements: 35 by 50cm.

Very good antique condition. Some fading to colours, yellowing to margins, wear to corners as well as later midcentury frame from M. Nakazawa.
