We believe this to be a vintage She Stone inkstand which originates from Anhui with a golden shadow pattern base.
Interestingly, the top layer has been carefully carved so that a golden layer of stone remains, which serves to highlight the deer motif. We have seen this pattern described as “golden shadow”, which is also present in the base. The engraving pattern suggests this would have been done in the early to mid 20th century, most likely from a newer Anhui mine. Stones from this region are highly collectible, with even modern inkstands going for upwards of AUD$800.

Measurements of base: 15cm across, 12cm deep. Approx 3 cm high.
Condition: Overall good vintage, near antique condition, with wear commensurate with use and age.
