We believe this to be a vintage near antique She inkstone which originates from Anhui with a water-type pattern.
Interestingly, the top layer has been carefully carved so that a yellow green layer of stone remains, which serves to highlight the peach motif and leaf embellishments. We have seen this pattern described as “eel yellow” or “yellow caviar” when more stippling is present in the pattern, which increases rarity and value of the stone. The pattern suggests this would have been done in the late Qing period, most likely early 20th century.
Stones from this region are highly collectible, with even modern inkstands going for upwards of AUD$800; we have priced this particular piece with condition and rarity in mind. As one of the 4 treasures of the scholar's study, this is a timeless piece to own and have.
Price marked: AUD$380
Measurements of base: 19 cm across, 13cm deep. Approx 4 cm high.
Condition: Overall good vintage, near antique condition, with wear commensurate with use and age. However there is one large chip to base of lid as pictured, which is slightly visible when displayed.
