A lovely vintage Japanese Satsuma vase handpainted with pheasant and wisteria motifs, circa early Showa Period (1930s to 1940s). Made by Soko China of Kobe, the westernised trade name for 湊光 (Minato Hikari). Satsuma pottery is one of Japan’s most distinctive ceramic styles, and first achieved renown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1867. Pottery from that period, as exemplified by these vases, is considered some of the finest produced by Japan and was a foundation of Japanese trade with the West during the Meiji Period.
Price marked at $140 AUD.
Measurements: 12.2cm high, 9.5cm diameter at widest point.
