This vintage English George V sterling silver napkin ring with marks for Mappin & Webb, Sheffield, 1929, is a piece of military silver from the 2nd Battalion of the South West Borderers, where it would have been used in the officers’ mess.
This British Army infantry unit was formed in 1689 and served for 280 years until 1969, when it was amalgated into The Royal Regiment of Wales.
Engraved with the regimental crest and the lucky number 69, with Egyptian motifs referencing the regiment’s extensive history in Egypt and the Middle East up to the inter-war period. During WWII, they saw extensive conflict, including Tsingtao, Gallipoli and France as well as Flanders.
