John Slater, one of the great names in English ceramics history, was the Art Director at Doulton & Co, Burslem from 1887 to 1914. The Doulton and Slater’s patent mark was used for many of the pieces incorporating his innovative glazes and techniques which helped bring the Doulton name to new heights.
This ceramic pitcher beautifully emulates a hand-stitched leather blackjack tankard, a drinking vessel popular since medieval times. The grain of the leather as well as the “stitching” is exquisitely replicated using the ceramics craftsmanship that was and remains a Doulton hallmark. Cheekily emblazoned with the underlined “Here’s Luck”, this is a beautiful example of late Victorian barware.
