Lovely late 19th century Doulton Burslem Spanishware cabinet plate with marks dating this to 1891-1902 (likely 1890s due to popularity of Spanishware at the time). Beautiful scalloped edge with gilt accents to rim and flowers. Unusual shell shaped design.
This type of ware was developed by John Slater, Doulton Burslem’s first art director. It was considered an innovative and unusual decoration for the time, and was highly popular in Victorian England from the early 1880’s into the early 1900’s. “Spanish Ware” has been described by Desmond Eyles in his book “The Doulton Burslem Wares” as “featuring exceedingly fine raised gold outline traceries of flowers, leaves, arabesques and other motifs, combined with on-glaze enamel painting and raised paste, often on a vellum or ivory ground”.

Measurements: Approximately 20cm by 18.5cm, height of 1.3 cm.
Condition: Some light rubbing to gilt around rim and to gilt interior accents on dish, One or two small spots of wear to glaze. Slight wear commensurate with age. Overall good antique condition otherwise.
