This rare and lovely Qing dynasty dish with provenance is a statement piece sure to delight any collector.

The provenance of this with original receipt was that it was sold in 1991 in the UK by an antiques dealer as a piece dating from reign of Emperor Qianlong (25 September 1711–
7 February 1799). Paperwork will be included in the sale.

Upon examination of the reign marks (which look to be apocryphal Chenghua marks), the style and overall characteristics (such as porcelain texture, glaze, etc.) we believe this is likely earlier and dates to the Kangxi period (4 May 1654–
20 December 1722).

Noted auction houses such as Christie's have remarked that "it is not uncommon to find 15th-century Ming dynasty reign marks on Qing dynasty blue and white porcelain made in the Kangxi period (1662-1722)".

Kangxi era Ming style porcelain is characterised as being less regimented in style than the Qianlong era porcelains, a livelier cobalt glaze, and overall more experimental in style and colouration.

This particular piece with its layered back and foreground, choice of subject with figures farming and riding a water buffalo, double ringed Chenghua mark, a thinly potted handfeel and overall quality points to it being mid to late 17th century, Kangxi period porcelain. Then too, Kangxi pieces tended to resolve their borders with patterns, whether cloud, floral and/or geometric. The variations in glaze and porcelain marks are another indication.

Price marked at $2600 AUD.

Measurements: 29 diameter, 3 cm height.
