This stunning early 1920s Royal Doulton Flambé glaze Sung ware vase is a truly unique and collectible art piece. Signed by the great artist, chief designer and art director of Royal Doulton Charles Noke, each Flambé glaze piece is by nature of the glaze one of a kind.
The art of flambé glaze or “sang de bouef” in the West was directly inspired by Ming dynastic pottery practices. In antiquity, Chinese potters relied on skill and intuition in order to achieve the stunning effects of copper oxides on pottery glaze.
Precise temperatures were required in order for the oxides to flash red; this skill only emerged in the West centuries later, with pioneers such as Charles Noke finally achieving this technique.
Flambé ware was launched in 1904; the Sung range which demonstrated the pinnacle of Royal Doulton’s flambé glaze techniques launched in 1920.

This particular vase demonstrates simplicity of form, the better for the glaze’s intrinsic to shine through. Photos do not do this justice; a full spectrum of true oxblood red, burgundy, purple, violets and blues can be seen throughout the vase. A perfect example of the versatility of flambé glaze.
This piece is highly desirable and collectible as on the base we have signatures by Charles Noke and F. Allen (Frank Allen), as well hallmarks for Royal Doulton, Flambé ware and Sung. The date stamps put it to 1920, the exact year Sung ware was launched.
It is in near perfect antique condition with wear only to the base commensurate with age.
