Republic Period (1911-1949) Cantonese rose medallion charger
Republic Period (1911-1949) Cantonese rose medallion charger
Soft, luminous colours, lovely gilt inner borders and densely packed patterns- this is an excellent example of a Republic Period (1911-1949) Cantonese rose medallion charger.
Known in Chinese as 粉彩, these translucent enamels are rendered in pastel shades and were carefully applied by hand. Made in Canton for the export market, they were produced in varying stages of fineness between the 18th and 20th centuries.
This piece is decorated with courtly figures against an intricate background, as well as ruyi-shaped patterns as well as a pattern of floral and fauna. While loosely decorated, the enamels are still applied by hand and have the signature luminous look of top quality midcentury fencai pieces.
With an apocryphal Qianlong reign mark and rich gilt accents, I would date this to be approximately 1930s to 40s.
Price marked at $550 AUD
Measurements: 27.2cm across
Excellent vintage near antique condition with light wear to enamels and gilt, as well as base as pictured.
