This Meiji Period .950 silver kashibako, i.e. sweet or cake box, is a lovely example of antique Japanese silver. With Meiji period marks for Jungin, .950 silver, and the swallow mark for renowned silversmith Kintaro Hattori (1860-1934), this is a piece to behold and never again find.

During the Edo period, Japanese sweets rapidly developed. One example would be wagashi, delicate desserts which blended taste with art. Presentation was of paramount important whether presenting wagashi as gifts or during a tea ceremony, which meant that kashibako also became increasingly exquisite. The tea ceremony, cha no yu, is a foundation of Japanese art and culture. Utensils associated with this ritual took on a ceremonial, even spiritual aspect accordingly.

Hattori Kintaro was a talented and influential figure during the Meiji Period; by 1881, he established his own company K Hattori & Co. in Tokyo, no small feat particularly considering his age then at 21. He made his name by specialising in timepieces, founding the iconic brand Seiko. Hattori was a major retailer of fine jewelry and silver before WWII, and early pieces such as this one are extremely rare and desirable.

The Jungin “Pure Silver” mark was used primarily during the Meiji Period 1868-1912, and denotes silver of .950 silver purity. With beautifully etched traditional Japanese symbols such as the crane and turtle, which symbolise longevity, as well as botanical motifs for the four seasons.

Price marked at $800 AUD.
