This rare large Art Deco French cicada majolica vase is perfect for the upcoming summer months.

Circa 1930s to 40s, this lovely vintage piece is signed by L. Berty, and has the impressed crossed keys mark for St. Jean Du Desert located in Marseille which has produced outstanding faience pottery for centuries. During the 19th century, faience production declined; the company “Faïencerie de Sant-Jean-du-Désert" made a resurgence and produced faience ware from 1921-1959.

A second signature, which is worn, we believe to be Sicard. These cicada vases were first produced by François Sigard (1850-1942) and gained great popularity. In France, giving these symbolised well-wishes and happiness for the home. The cicada’s song celebrates summer, heat, laidback living and well-being.

The vase itself is also beautifully hand-painted in lovely sunset colours, showcasing a silhouetted couple. A charming piece that suits many styles, from French Provincial to Art Deco.

Price marked at $550 AUD.
