A rare piece of early hallmarked Late Colonial to Early Federation Australian silver, this charming miniature sterling silver boomerang captures the enterprising sentiment of Australiana. This may have been intended as a souvenir back in the day but could also be a bookmark or miniature letter opener.

Marked STG for sterling and maker’s mark for Palfrey, who was a Melbourne jeweller active 1897-1927. While exact records are hard to determine, by 1919 his enterprise was a firmly established family business. They would trade under the name Palfrey & Daughter at 317 Little Collins Street until 1922, when they then moved to Howey Place. This piece is therefore circa 1900s.

As much early Australian silver was unmarked, pieces like this which showcase the whimsy and imagination of early Australian silversmiths are particularly desirable. Whether as a collector of silver or Australiana, this piece is sure to please.

Price marked at $600 AUD.
