Rare antique New Zealand sterling silver butter or cheese knife with nephrite jade handle
Rare antique New Zealand sterling silver butter or cheese knife with nephrite jade handle
Small but very elegant, this rare antique New Zealand sterling silver butter or cheese knife with nephrite jade handle bears English sterling silver marks to the blade for Birmingham, 1920, sponsor’s mark for Adie & Lovekin Ltd., who were active from 1894 to 1927. Silversmiths being relatively uncommon in New Zealand at the time, it is likely that silver blades and settings were made in the Old World and shipped to New Zealand where they would have been mounted. The silver contrasts beautifully with the nephrite which is native to New Zealand amongst other countries and has been prized throughout time for its beauty and rich green shade.
