Rare antique French Red Sash Royalist tortoiseshell snuff box with miniature portrait, post French Revolution

Stunning and rare late 18th to early 19th century French Red Sash Royalist tortoiseshell snuff box with miniature portrait with unmarked gold mount. Based upon research, these portrait snuff boxes were largely made circa 1795 to 1805, which we believe to be accurate for this particular example.

This is beautifully made depicting a young Royalist woman soon after the Terror of 1793 to 1794, with the blood red sash spilling over her shoulder indicating that she lost someone to the guillotine, or was a member of nobility that fled France during the Revolution.

The gold mounts for these boxes were typically unmarked and made from 18k gold which we believe to be the case for this example as well. However this has not been XRF tested.

A beautifully painted, solemn yet evocative piece.

Good antique condition with wear overall commensurate with age. Typical of these snuff boxes made from antique tortoiseshell, this has minor chips and fleabites to the inner and outer rims of lid and box as pictured. Unsigned, and this portrait was likely painted on an ivory plaque as was typical of the period.
